When I Depart.

What happens when you leave a place?

When you spend so long in one place and suddenly stand up, put on your coat, and leave. Never turning back. Growing up fast and living in the flood of familiar faces. Calling out the names of sirens in the hallways. Those who flow through the stairwells and pass you by each and every day. Faces that hold your hand on the first day of school and give wind to your sails. These faces that lift your wings and the faces that slash at your bones. Pulling the scarf against the gusts of light and covering your eyes from the view in lost memories. When you take a deep breath and sink into normal. Press into the fresh sheets for a minute or three, then leave.

When you leave a place, is your name still sealed in the stone? Or does it begin to shatter like the sands on your porch? When your body steps from today and your spirit still lingers in yesterday. Do your footsteps remain in the hearts of others? Does the hurt one caused still be sealed in the foundation of what has gone by? Do you leave behind a story just begun, or a chapter lost to the waves? If you leave your home, does your home come with you? Does it sprout tiny legs and tiny feet and run with you in the sky? Do the tears in your eyes give words to the letters never sent? Does the love you once felt become rewritten in the stars?

Moving, moving, moving. Where?

When you leave a place, do you ever really return? The place you may visit or seak out, is it ever really there again? Are those faces of the hallways the same when you depart? Do they change when you are not there? Do the faces grow paler in the fields or do the shadows darken in the mist? These faces are not the same when I return, not the same when I depart. But to the face that carries your own name, the face that stare inside you, does it change as well?

Here is you and here is home. You are there, but you are here. I am gone but I am there. I am leave but I am home.

Soon I shall leave this place.
